Reading and Writing Groups
As part of the Centre’s mission to support the creation and enjoyment of quality literature, we offer a range of workshop and writing groups where members can develop their skills in a friendly, professional environment.
These groups are provided free to members and each have their own focus area. On top of this, the Centre always does its best to respond to the needs and wishes of its members – if you believe there is scope to introduce a new writing group exploring a new area of writing, we will work with you to bring your vision to live.
Sign-up is required prior to attending any group, and enquiries for all writing groups or suggestions for the creation of a new group can be made by contacting the Centre at email@example.com
Our current reading and writing groups are:

The Black Wallaby Indigenous Writers Group is a team of Aboriginal writers from the Illawarra, the NSW Riverina, Gippsland, and Cape Barren Island. The Black Wallaby Indigenous Writers work on a wide variety of projects, from workshopping writing to the publication of the Dreaming Inside poetry series. The group is always seeking new and emerging writers with a goal of raising the profile of Aboriginal literature within Australia’s literary culture.

Ron Pretty is a member of the Order of Australia for his services to literature. He has a deep involvement in Australian poetry. Poetry With Bite

Ron also hosts a reading group that critically appraises contemporary poetry as well as reads for pure enjoyment. The group is very open and loves sharing in all kinds of poetry. This is a Word Salad event, held the 2nd Wed every month at the Philanthropy Tribe Book Cafe, 151 Crown St, Wollongong, 6.30 to 8 pm.
Keira Fiction Writers

Keira Fiction Writers meets on the first Wednesday of the month from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in the Wollongong Library Theatrette to workshop and discuss all manner of short fiction writing. The group is made up of a number of novel writers and is always seeking new members and new perspectives on writing.
The Rebel Poets are a feisty group of poets who meet weekly to workshop their poetry. The focus is on traditional styles such as rhyming poetry, limericks, haiku and short verse. The group also regularly engages in social events to maintain social bonds and have a laugh. On the third Monday of each month they perform at Figtree Hotel as part of the Figgy Folk Sessions (Black Board Event). Contact the Centre for more information.
Young Writers Group
Facilitator: Helena Fox
Writing is a dynamic way of engaging with the world and a useful skill for young people in articulating their experiences and ideas, as well as continue their educations. Helena Fox is a writer, teacher, and kindness ninja who has many years experience working with young people as a tutor and facilitator in creative writing.
Because of the specific constrains this workshop is presented with, there are additional costs associated with this group. Every effort is made to keep these costs to a minimum. Prospective members should read this information and then contact the Centre.
Playing with Drafts Playwriting Group
Facilitator: Joel Burrows
Joel Burrows is a local playwright and performance-maker. Joel has previously run writing workshops for Headspace and the Shopfront Arts Co-Op. In 2019 he is writing a new play with support from the Merrigong Theatre Company. The playwriting workshop provides a rare opportunity to develop scriptwriting and stage management skills that address the unique environment of the theatre.
The group meets on the first Friday of the month at the University of Wollongong, Building 19 Room GO20, from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. Small fee ($5 or gold coin) to be paid direct to the facilitator to cover costs.
Inspiraciones Literarias: Bi-lingual Writers
Facilitator: Cleo Ravello
The meeting arrangements for the Bilingual Writers group remain to be confirmed, but the group wants to help writers develop their skills across and between languages. Presently, the group has a focus on Spanish–English writing; however, all those with non-English speaking backgrounds are more than welcome to join.
