Every Story Counts: Recording Migration Heritage by Meredith Walker
Every Story Counts: Recording Migration Heritage is an exciting new publication designed to guide people in writing, understanding and interpreting local migration histories. Commissioned by the Illawarra Migration Heritage Project and written by Meredith Walker, Every Story Counts maintains that there is no ‘one way’ of recording migration experiences. Instead, it offers framework and practical suggestions that encourage individuals and groups to follow themes in shaping their stories, telling the good and the not-so-good.
Using Wollongong as a case study, Meredith Walker’s thematic approach gives voice to memories which would not be heard or shared and ones which are rarely documented formally. The publication is intended for individuals, community groups, students, educators and those working in the cultural, community and heritage sectors.
Every Story Counts is presented in two parts: part one outlines the history of post-Second World War migration to Australia and settlement using eleven historical themes while part two provides ten suggestions for recording your migration stories and tips for getting started.
