Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1949 to 1950, Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry in 1956, the National Book Award winner in 1970, and the recipient of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1976, Elizabeth Bishop is regarded as one of the finest poets of the 20th century. Her poems posed a startling contradiction to her contemporaries through their contrast between rich details and an objective, distant point of view utterly detached from the influence of her personal life.
