Wollongong Writers' Festival 2014
The South Coast Writers Centre, in partnership with the Wollongong Writers Festival, will be holding 6 events for readers and writers of all kinds.
8 October – Rock and Rhyme
An open mike night for rhyming poetry and song with a prize in each category for the best performer.
9 October – ABC Open 500 Words Workshop
ABC Open Illawarra producer Sean O’Brien will play the best of the ABC Open 500 Words stories, gathered from around Australia. Sean will also give an info presentation on the 500 Words project, tips on keeping your writing succinct, and how to get involved. Your contributed stories will be published on the ABC.
9 October – Who Says Shorter Is Not Better?
A panel discussion about the role of short stories in the wider Australian literary landscape, why it has been somewhat neglected in the history of writing and why it seems to have become more relevant than ever.
10 October – Festival Launch/Meet and Greet
Come along to meet your fellow Festival-goers! We will be launching the South Coast Writers Centre anthology, the UOW’s LitSoc zine and Tertangala.
11 October – Poetry and Revolutions
This panel explores this notion in light of political upheaval in history and crises that are playing out at present. The panel will explore Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara’s poetry and political mythologising, protested swearing in poetry, Lucan’s—who was executed for his involvement in an attempt to assassinate the Emperor Nero—anti-war poem ‘On the Civil War’ and hip hop as poetry.
12 October – Rocket Readings
Our annual Rocket Readings event takes off at the Wollongong Art Gallery with an open mic night full of fun.
