December at SCWC
by Martin Veres
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the centre
Not a creature was stirring – except for this stentor;
And before we all go on our break for the year
I'll fill you in on the events we've got here;
Assuming, of course, that you're free to show up
Here is our program – just to wrap the year up
December – March
Asia in a Few Words Writing Competition
Deadline: 26 March
Cost: $5 submission fee
We're kicking off December with our Asia in a Few Words writing competition. Submissions are on the theme of "Asian Stories", and you can send up to 40 lines of Peking poetry, or 500 words of prose to firstname.lastname@example.org. The winner will have a chance to read their piece at the Asia in a Few Words event on 7 April.
For further information, please contact Rike at SCWC on 4228 0151.
10.00am – 2.00pm, Sturt Cottage, Mittagong
Cost: $85, or $65 for SCWC and Sturt members; $35 for under 18s
Facilitated by Michele Seminara
On the second day of Christmas, come on down to Mittagong for a poetry workshop, where you'll get the opportunity to bring up to three poems that need a little work, or maybe just a fresh pair of eyes. Work together with professionals (and one another) to iron out the kinks, and get those problematic parcels of pernicious poetry looking perfect – right in time for summer!
Workshop participants are also granted free entry to the evening reading (see below), so feel free to stick around and make a day of it.
5.00 – 8.00pm, Sturt Cottage, Mittagong
Cost: $35, or $25 for SCWC members and friends of Sturt
Facilitated by Rhiannon Hall
In the evening, Little Mountain Readings will be holding its annual poetry reading event, so after a morning of crafting words, you can sit back, relax, and listen to some of the South Coast's finest unfetter their letters. The readings will be followed by an open mic session – the perfect opportunity to field test your own creation, if you're feeling up to it.
There will also be a raffle on the night (tickets sold on the night), where you can pick up some books for both you and the kids.
Workshop: Maximising Social Media for Creatives
1.00 – 4.00pm, Wollongong Central Library
Cost: $35, or $25 for SCWC members
Facilitated by Sandy Fussell
Calling all writers, artists and event managers! Let our tech guru, Sandy, show you how to effectively use social media, and make it less of a chore and more of a chortle. Learn how to build genuine connections using Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and get yourself out there!
5.30 – 7.30pm, Wollongong Arts Precinct
On the 8th day of Christmas, the Writers Centre gave to me: a 20 year anniversary! … picnic! It's been another great year, full of literary events in the Illawarra. The picnic will feature a Guest Speaker, Jennifer Farinella, as well as readings by a pantheon of SCWC greats, and the Young Writers Collective.
There will be a raffle (you can buy tickets here), as well as a mystery prize for most festively dressed. So stuff your stockings, Kris your Kringles, and put on your best Michael Bublé Christmas charm, because it's gonna be one holly jolly afternoon, people!
