December at SCWC

by Yvette Gilfillan

Dashing through the door,

with a rusty writer’s pen,

kicking up the papers,

emerging from your den,

friends are by your side,

picnic rug in hand,

it’s summertime and we ask you to

our annual Christmas grand …

Okay, so the SCWC version of Aussie Jingle Bells ran out of steam towards the end there, but that’s exactly why we finish off the year with our Christmas picnic—to finally relax and celebrate all our hard work!

Friday 7th of December:

The SCWC Annual Christmas Picnic 2018

In the fresh coastal air of a Wollongong evening, with a spread of picnic blankets and baskets, this summer literary event will cap off another successful year for the South Coast Writers Centre. In 2018, we welcomed a host of new members, thrived on our headquarters at the University of Wollongong, and held a staggering 150 events.

There will be live readings and performances from SCWC authors, members and emerging local talent, including the Young Writers Collective. The winners of the HARP creative writing competition ‘The Things We Don’t Talk About’ will also be announced, and they’ll be invited to read their work, receive their prizes, and spark the conversation surrounding mental health and literacy.

A smorgasbord of books will be available to eat—I mean buy—from our colourful book stall, featuring publications from SCWC members including sci-fi author Alan Baxter, acclaimed poet Ron Pretty, romance novelist Catherine Evans, and more! All editions of Dreaming Inside: Voices from Junee Correctional Centre will be available at very exclusive, very special prices.

And finally, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a raffle of assorted prizes, and a mystery gift to the most festively dressed attendant! Come as a delightfully garish piece of tinsel, or dress as your favourite character from a Christmas novel … and help us all experience a touch of literary magic.

It will be a FREE event to all, and to all a good night!

The Centre will be closed from the 13th of December until the 15th of January, so we wish all our members a Merry Christmas! Thank you for your support—we will see you in the new year.
