Thrillers coming fast like pounding rain, microfiction shaking the trees, poetry falling in the golden-brown hues of autumn leaves, burnt around the edges by the lightning strike of romance novellas … this month has everything you want to see in the world and more.
Saturday 9th of June:
Readings and Music in Colour
From 1.30 pm, Wollongong Art Gallery
The winners of the ‘Reading in Colour’ writing competition will be announced this Saturday, in conjunction with the art exhibition Chromophilia. Award-winning Australian author Sandy Fussell will lead the discussion on the fascinating canvas of colour in writing, and the winners will read from their poetry and prose works.

Word Salad – Enjoying and Reading the Poetry of Jennifer Maiden
6 pm – 8 pm, Philanthropy Tribe Café
Jennifer Maiden is one of the most illustrious poets on our reading list at Word Salad, being the recipient of many incredible prizes—including the Victorian Premier’s Award for Literature. She explores themes of violence, war and trauma in her poetry, with her intriguing blend of public figures and fictional characters.

Word Salad – Big Book Club for Jane Harper’s Force of Nature
6 pm – 8 pm, Philanthropy Tribe Café
Come together with other like-minded individuals to discuss Jane Harper’s latest sensation, Force of Nature. Five women go on a hiking expedition that is simply supposed to be a break away from work … only four come out. Vent your feelings at this event!

Annual General Meeting
12.30 pm – 1.30 pm, Building 19, Room G020
All members are invited to attend this year’s annual meeting. The SCWC chair, secretary and treasurer are all stepping down from their positions, so this would be a wonderful opportunity to get professional experience being part of a creative arts board. Word Salad – Microfiction Night
6 pm – 8 pm, Philanthropy Tribe Café
Anastasia Richards, Aubrey Lidden and Dayle Beazley are all creative arts students from UOW who will be presenting their microfictions, so hear their unique perspectives and bring your own stories to read at the open mic!

‘How to Write a Romance Novella’ with Catherine Evans

This is a sneaky foreshadowing for next month’s event, but the best romance novels do leave you in suspense! Local romance author Catherine Evans will present a workshop which gives you hands-on experience in writing a compelling opening scene.
