2019 IWD Power Voice for Balance Event and Competition Winners
The annual Power Voice event was held on Friday 8 March to celebrate International Women's Day at the Wollongong Art Gallery. This year's theme was Power Voice For Balance. The room was packed - not a spare seat and eight decades of women represented - a wealth of stories and inspiration!
Fiona Butler graced us with her beautiful voice, and shared that it was the first time she had sung in some time.
The Centre's Media and Marketing Manager, Adara Enthaler, was the Master of Ceremonies - and she was awesome. She was also wise wise wise! reminding us that we are more fortunate than many, and encouraging us all to use our privilege to speak for those who cannot. Speak up! act! and keep on having those difficult conversations.
Anne-Louise Rentell, Aunty Barbara Nicholson and Ali-Jane Smith shared the adventure that developing Sirens has been so far. They talked about the need to share our stories, and the rigour of writing a project that stems from oral histories.
The winners of the Power Voice writing competition were announced and the overall winner, Annette Loughlin-Smith read her poem. Regretfully, Peter Collins and Cathy Wagner could not attend. Their poems were read by Adara, who is an accomplished spoken word poet.
1st –The Dance, Annette Loughlin-Smith
2nd – #NOTALLMEN, Peter Collins
3rd - Balance, Cathy Wagner
Thank you to everyone who attended the event and participated in the writing competition.
